Scoring the Past
Scoring the Past is an ongoing personal project by Ian Somers that explores the emotional power of music and memory. Using archival Super 8 footage of Vancouver, it’s intimate, imperfect, and deeply nostalgic. Ian creates original scores designed to reframe these captured moments and evoke the feelings they carry.
Each piece is less about historical accuracy than it is about mood and emotional resonance. Through layered textures, melodic fragments, and evolving harmonies, Ian transforms everyday scenes of the past into cinematic reflections on time, place, and how we remember. The result is an immersive audio-visual experience where sound and image work together to bring memories to life.
Trauma Novelle
Ian Somers has written and produced numerous compositions for Trauma Novelle - a project that blurs the lines between performance art, nightclub act, and theatre. Described as “a sophisticated, emotional and immersive musical experience,” Trauma Novelle conjures a world where Serge Gainsbourg and Suicide might meet David Lynch on a smoky stage. Ian’s contributions bring depth, atmosphere, and cinematic edge to the project’s darkly evocative sound.
Love & Mathematics
Before moving fully into composing, Ian was the singer, guitarist, and co-songwriter for the indie band Love and Mathematics. Blending intricate guitar work with melodic songwriting, the band carved out a distinctive sound that balanced raw emotion with thoughtful musicianship. This project marked a formative period in Ian’s creative journey, shaping the musical instincts he now brings to his work in film and television.
